"I'd put my money on the sun and solar energy. What a source of power! I hope we don't have to wait till oil and coal run out before we tackle that."
- Thomas Edison 1931

My friend Lester Brown's book Plan B 4.0 may be the most important book you will ever read.  You can buy Plan B 4.0 online here at Lester's website.  Also available at Amazon.

Solar Powered Emergency Lighting
12 & 24 Volt Lighting Systems

Lighting is one of the most important requirements in the case of an emergency or power outage and we can provide an emergency lighting system to meet your exact requirements.  There is nothing worse than being in the dark during an emergency,

We represent Phocos, one of the world's leading manufacturers of low voltage compact fluorescent light bulbs and LED light bulbs, available in either 12 or 24 volts DC, in cool or warm white spectrums.

12 Volt DC Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs

12 VDC bulbs come in the following wattages: 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 15 and 30, either cool or warm white.  These all have a standard American light bulb E27 Edison base.

24 Volt DC Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs

24 VDC bulbs are available and are 15 watts, either cool or warm.  These have a standard American light bulb E27 Edison base.

12 Volt LED Light Bulbs

Phocos also has some extremely bright LED light bulbs with either cool white or warm white spectrums that use only 1 watt of 12 volt and will retain at least 80 percent luminosity after 7,000 hours.  Useful life is typically 50,000 hours or more = 5 plus years of continuous operation.  These also have E27 Edison bases.

A Typical Emergency Lighting System

A typical system includes one or more deep draw batteries, one or more solar panels, a charge controller, a fuse for safety, a simple disconnect switch, a means of connecting the battery to the panel and charge controller and a string of lights with fixtures and bulbs.

A  complete solar system to run five 15 watt lamps for 12 hours a day will cost about $1,500 depending on the available sun hours and autonomy for your geographic location.  A Sun Xtender AGM Solar Battery would be a wise choice which we can provide or you can purchase locally a deep draw 12 volt marine battery, should be less than $100.

The lights can also work from the battery charged from a battery charger powered by the grid.

The key question regarding system sizing has to do with what is called autonomy, the number of cloudy days in a row (or number of days you are off the grid) where you need 100 percent reliability for your lighting system.

Other Solar Powered Lighting Applications

Solar powered lighting is also ideal for remote locations where running power from the grid is either impossible or cost prohibitive.  Examples we use ourselves include lighting for barns, sheds, the hen house and for camping.  Ditch the old noisy stinky white gas lantern and light up your campsite.

Boat houses and boat docks, remote cabins and cottages, outdoor picnic shelters and pavilions are all opportunities to put the sunshine to work for you.  Compared to running grid power and meeting inspections and codes, low voltage solar power is often the most cost effective solution.

Custom Configured Lighting Systems

Whatever your emergency solar lighting and power requirements, we can help you configure a system or multiple systems that meet your exact requirements.
